Nickelodeon Time Capsule
Do any of you remember back in 1992, Nickelodeon had a TV special where they buried a time capsule not to be opened until 2042?
I remember watching it. They were interviewing kids about what they put in it. The kids were saying how when they grew up, they'd want to see what they liked when they were kids.
Since then, Nickelodeon has withered into a shell of its former self. It looks as if no one will be there in 2042 to open the capsule.
Well there's a petition going around on the Internet. It's a petition to make sure the capsule is not forgotten. I think it would be really cool to watch them open it when I'm in my late 50's.
It has over 1,000 signatures, so I'm not the only one who'd like to see this happen. For some reason, the author has closed the petition but you can check it out anyway.

According to a picture I have seen, the time capsule is gone.

As guillermo pointed out, the time capsule was moved to the Nick Hotel in Orlando Florida.
The reason for this is Nickelodeon no longer has any real involvement with Universal Studios and the time capsule needs to stay in the possession of Nickelodeon.
The Nick Hotel is fairly close to Universal Studios, so it made sense to send the time capsule there.
It has been reported that the time capsule looks a bit different today than it did when it was located outside the Nickelodeon Studios complex.
The past 2 or so years, there has been a large outcry of from people who were “Kids of the 90’s” over the closing of Nickelodeon Studios. Comments left on Nickelodeon Studios videos on Youtube tend to be extremely critical of Blue Man Group because so many people have bought into the misconception that BMG was somehow responsible for the closing.
What people are forgetting is that 18 months had passed between the time Nickelodeon closed the facility and the time Blue Man Group surfaced. Also, there are other organizations that use different parts of the buildings, but BMG is the best known, so they, as a result, end up being vilified.
Nickelodeon Studios was built in an attempt to create a “Hollywood” on the east coast. The stages in the buildings were designed to host game shows and comedies and for many years, Nickelodeon was able to produce numerous shows and specials at the facility.
But, beginning in the very late 90’s, changes started to take place. Some of which are:
1) Nickelodeon’s target audience lost interest in game shows and comedies.
2) The number of visitors to Nickelodeon Studios fell off a cliff even on the days when the rest of Universal Studios was packed.
3) Celebrities refused to relocate from southern California to Orlando. As a result Nickelodeon could not produce any new shows in Orlando.
The writing was on the wall. It became clear to Nickelodeon that the Orlando facility had no future. Time had moved on and left Nickelodeon Studios behind.
During this time, most of the people who worked at the complex moved out to southern California to find work because the entertainment industry is centered on Hollywood/southern California not Orlando Florida.
Then, in 2005, Nickelodeon turned out the lights one last time, locked the doors and brought to a close the final chapter of Nickelodeon Studios.
Today, the buildings are still standing and very much alive. The outsides are painted differently and some inside modifications have been made. However many parts of the buildings that are not open to the public still sport Nickelodeon Studios logos, stickers and pictures.
The current tenants are very much aware of the buildings’ past and the impact they had on an entire generation. They have taken steps to preserve the spirit of Nickelodeon Studios.
It needs to be understood that there is a business side to the entertainment industry. And it made no business sense for Nickelodeon to continue paying Universal to keep the complex open. No visitors and no shows mean no money coming in. Keeping the buildings empty as a “tribute” or “memorial” to Nickelodeon Studios was also out of the question. The buildings need to be maintained and who would want to spend large sums of money to keep empty/deserted buildings from falling apart?
Nickelodeon Studios may no longer exist, but it lives on in the buildings that housed it as well as in pictures, videos and hearts of all who were touched by the magic that came out of it.
